Heraldry is the science of knowing about official emblems, badges, banners, flags, seals and faction colours.

Contents

Basics

In Legonia, most countries, armies and other kind of factions and organisations present themselves in typical colours and symbols. Also smaller groups like primitive tribes, cults, guilds, races, aristocratic families, cities or military forces can have their signs to recognize themselves or their poverty.

Ordinary, a kingdom has one main banner made on a small sharped or an oval shield. The emblem can show colours, a special pattern and also a symbol. In most countries, the typical symbols are animals representing an important aspect of their culture or military. So, a bear can be interpreted as warning about a powerful military force, a cute dolphin would stand for a peaceful coast region. Popular symbol animals are the lion, eagle and dragons.

Colourshemes are limited to the materials available, so blue, red, yellow and other simple ones are used often, in exotic regions unusual colours are possible, too. The basic colours have special meanings, which can variate from culture to culture, too. There's no rule, that the emblem and the official flag and amor coloursheme have to use the same colours but often they do.

Blazon The term "Blazon" describes the art of banner description in heraldry. Different than the real world, we haven't big rules for it in Legonia. Banners are just described in clear but still artistic sounding words. That's because every school of heraldry in Legonia teaches own rules.

Heraldry in society

For a noble citizen and all other educated people it's important to know at least some major emblems and colour codes to identify foreign soldiers, ambassadors etc. in meetings, festivals and other points of life. On the western continent, the human kingdoms owns many shires and cities who have own emblems and colours. A tournament in the Middle Kingdom couldn't be organised without a scholar of heraldry. Also border guards and most military generals have to learn about heraldry, for example to identify specific enemies from far distance. Travellers need the knowlegde to know where they actually are and which kingdom is ruling over the current region travelled.

Because the world is big and legonians can't even know every faction in the world, there's no heraldry master, who can list all existing symbols and flags. Anyway, schools teaching this knowlegde are in many capital or big cities like Azuran. Other teachers are the professors of blue mage academies, high aristocrates or other private well educated men.
