Eberhart, the dragoncleaver, also known as Eberhart of Torffingen, was a famous soldier in the Lion army who fought in the Dragon war. He was born as noble son in the shire Torffingen around 1534 o.C. . It's assumed, that he died 1582 o.C. in the Battle of Deadwood.
Life and Legend
All the facts can say, is that Eberhart was son of a lower royality living in the Lion kingdom. After he had grown up in a small settlement near Torffingen he became knave 1546 o.C. at king's castle in the royal shire, where he was trained to a knight. Since 1552 o.C. he served the 4th regiment of the lion army, which was stationed mostly at the northern border of the kingdom. People will later talk about him as brave and talented warrior but also as cool-headed and intelligent strategist. When the Dragon war broke out in the 1570's, his army fought several times against intruders of the Dragon Empire. After the epic battle of deadwood, he was never been seen again. This is the point, where the facts end and the legend begins.
Within running years and mouth-to-mouth telling Eberhart became a symbol of glory and strength. The people told many stories about the Dragon war in Deadwood, in which Eberhart was mentioned often as frontline warrior, who beat majorities of enemies and even killed 33 dragon riders just with his sword, shield and mind. Of course, nobody can say, which stories are true and which not. Also many different happenings of the war were put together, in which Eberhart probably wasn't involved, but after many years, every man and woman in the Middle Kingdom believes that Eberhart the dragoncleaver was the biggest warrior of all time and only with his help, the king won the war. (In real, there wasn't a winner.) Until today, over 30 fairy tales, 5 anthems, one dozen essays and 10 fictional novels were written about him and his real and untrue adventures.
Fictional character
In the fictional stories, Eberhart of Torffingen's life and personality is rewritten in many directions to stylize him as typical hero, making him a propaganda figure for the Middle Kingdom's army. According to the 10 famous novels, Eberhart of Torffingen was born summer 1540 o.C. as one of 10 sons in his family. The first big novel "Eberhart, the boarkiller" tells the story of his childhood and how he killed a wild pig in age of 6. The book says, he was always a diligent boy in school and protected the weak if possible. The second book "Eberhart, the Ogreslaughterer" tells how he protected a village in the royal shire against an ogre while his knight training. Begin of the 3rd adventure "Eberhart and the wolfpack massacre" he was already a strong muscle-packed man with strong belief in the big something, in "Eberhart, the deadly seducer" he betroths himself with an elven princess, while "Eberhart, the pirate hangman" mentions a human family and 6 children. In book 6, "Eberhart, the blackmage's chastiser" he was also given magic skills. With "Eberhart, the avenger of Bergfingen", his time in the Dragonwar was started to be told. In "Eberhart, the Northmenplaguer", he avanges the murder of his wife and kills 200 northmen in a secret mission. "Eberhart, the dragoncleaver" deals about the battle in Deadwood and refers to some real events in his life. All the same, he isn't a simple knight in the novel, but a ful general, who lose his complete regiment but slaughter 33 big green dragons alone instead. The last book "Eberhart, the legendary conqueror of Thorun" tells a ful-fictional unbelievable story about an old Eberhart, who tricks the death in a chess play, so he could stay alive forever if he wants. In the last chapter, he leaves the Middle Kingdom an builds a small house somewhere in Deadwood, where he should live untill today with a beautiful elven princess and one hundred kids.
