History
Colonisation
The origin of the northmen were wild tribes, who united to the Black Dragon Army somewhere in the 15th century o.C. . After first failed attempts to conquer fruitful space in the south, a first culture developed in the 1520's, when the first blue mage Merlin experimented with dragons and teached warriors to control them. Merlin was also the man, who brought education to the small villages. 1556 o.C. the Dragon Empire were created and King Torkash crowned. With Merlin's help as highest advisor, civilisation was on its way.
Age of the Dragons
While the 1570's military was revolutionized and a strong army of dragon riders prepared to expand the kingdom. Until 1587, the Battle of Deadwood, the great Dragon War against the Lion Kingdom was running.
After another loose, colonisation pointed more to the east and west, where the northmen fought the vikings.
Around 1600, the golden Age of the Empire ended because environment changes caused cold winters, hunger and death, many kinds of the dragons died and after Merlin's death, nobody was wise enough to lead.
Divided
When Torkash died 1600, the Empire was devided under his sons Atork, Fenrich and Mulrich.
Politics
As classic monarchy, King Torkash ruled as central leader, created taxes and commanded the armies. Local problems were solved by the village elders. Only in worse cases like judging a murderer, audiences at the king were hold.
The mage Merlin had big influence in political decissions because he was Torkash's highest advisor and a wise men, the king always trusted more than anybody else.
Culture
The Dragon Empire's daily life was most influenced by Merlin, who brought education, law suggestions and theological ideas to the wild tribes.
But the people were still warriors and hunters and their most important intention was always to defend their homevillage, serve the king and collect ancient tales and stories. Entertainment was brought by travelling bardes and jesters. Another cultural hype dealt with Merlin himself. He was just the king's advisor and hadn't any other official titles but in many small settlement his name was more famous than the king's one.
Compared to later societies in the Northern Kingdom, clothes were more colourful and used the dragon symbol often. Also the warriors of that era were more agressive than the current axemen.
Military
The military was legendary because not only the bravest and strongest men fought for the king, they were able to leash dragons, which they ride into their battles. The dragon riders were trained for years by Merlin in his secret cave fortress. First, smaller Slimowitches were used, later also the big green dragon.
The Infantry used long helebardes, axes and big shields. Because the dragon riders were able to fly, crossbow and bow units were rare that time.
Althought the army seemed to be almighty, it didn't win the Battle in Deadwood 1587 o.C. against the Lion Kingdom. After the dragons became rare, the military force decreased, so the viking attacks became a stronger menace.
