Unicorn
From Legonia
One of the last mysteries in legonian nature are the rare horse species with an impressive horn. The Unicorn inspired many bardes and writers to their songs and legends but also the curiosity of sorcerors.
Biology
A Unicorn is a white skinned mammal with 4 legs and belongs to the family of horses. But different to other horse races, the unicorn has one big horn on its forehead, which is said to own many magical abilities. Because many alchemists and magicains wanted this horn, the shy and vegetarian animal was hunted and is nearly died out today. Details about its lifetime are not known because unicorns normally avoid contact to human beings.
Spread
Formerly, unicorns lived on many places in Legonia but today their population decreased to isolated corners of the world upside the civilization. In theanicent west of the western continent about 1-300 unicorns survived and are cultured by amazones.
It's said that in the far south-east of Legonia, the Unicorn forests is the home of a few powerful unicorns.
Though long left unicorn symbols can be found in the heraldry of the Orlanian lands so probably unicorn population existed there once.
Mythology
Unicorns have many meanings in different cultures. In the northern world and the southern countries they're not very popular and only educated mages know their tales. In Morica, Leonidas and Draco Regno they're more known and so they appear in many emblems, decorations etc. of their culture. Unicorns should hold big magic and in some stories they're very intelligent. Like the Centaurs they're made my the gods to guard over holy places and wild forests. The blood of an unicorn can make you immortal if drunken but it's also a sacrilege against the big Something.
For the amazones and elves, who handle with these animals more often, they're seen as beautiful but ordinary creatures of legonia's nature and there's no special cult about them. Probably, the unicorns from the ancient west are not the same you can find on the eastern continent.
