Nereids are the choosen people of the god Nereus and own the underwater kingdom Ner'u-mak.
Biology
Nereids once were humans from the Insaani culture. When the territory Ner'u-mak in the old empire has sunk into the ocean, most people died. But by devine interaction of the god Ner'u a part of the people got transformed to survive in the ocean. The Nereids are no result of normal evolution. A small backfin similiar to those of the Merrows makes them be able to swim while mutated respiratory organs with added gills allows to breathe also underwater. The upper part of the nereid body is a human one. The nereids eat all kind of seafood but less meat, about 50% of the population are vegetarians.
Culture
Except some rest traditions of the ancient old empire, the nereids adjusted their culture to the new environment of the sea. They don't know that other people of the old empire survived the 1st apocalypse and believe to be the only god-choosen human race. So the belief in their creator and protector Nereus is a basic aspect of their culture. But also other gods are known in the deep sea pantheon. The relationship to the ocean nature and its animals is friendly and respectful. Most nereids are loving their home and society, loners are not known. Though the nereid society is peaceful and patriotic to the kingdom Ner'u-mak, several communities left the home world to explore other oceans or waters. These packs are official seen as part of the kingdom though they often loose contact to the seaking and create their own settlements.
In the ocean, the nereids are enemies of the Merrows, Ophidaii, Naga and the Feared, while Temp'la are seen as friends. Some sea animals but also enslaved nagas are domesticated like horses. Nereids are shy and suspicious to other races and avoid the surface though some younger generations made contact with humans, especially mermaid legends are based on these encounters.
