Origin and History
The big Dragon War between Dragon Empire and Lion Kingdom ended in a week-long battle in the forests of Deadwood 1587 o.C. . During these fights, hundreds of people were killed. Since that, people of the northern lands feared the woods, which should be cursed. The crueled souls of dead soldiers, so the legends, were bound at this place and the old river aside the region filled forever with blood and won't be cleaned again. Aside, Deadwood became a neutral zone, doesn't belong to the Northern nor the Middle Kingdom.
While normal citizen avoided this place for long years, banished people, outsider magicains and criminals have used the refuge. On of them was the black mage. As follower of the "Dark worship of the high lords of the new world, of the unholy circle of demons, chaos and the last days", he experimented with unnatural evocation magic and called the sould or at least the countless skelletons and cadavers of the forest to serve him as undead army.
Under his command, the black army was build to conquer the Middle Kingdom. Or that's what their crusade 1645-1648 o.C. in Middle and Northern Kingdom let assumed. But the attacks were fakes. King Udalrich's mountain fortress got attacked and King Leo III.'s daughter kidnapped for a short time to hide the army's real goal: A second, bigger part of undead warriors travelled to the south with the black mage to discover an ancient demon portal in Dragonia Vulcania. Here he tried to summon prisoned demon gods. Fortunately, 1648 o.C. in the big battle at the demon portal his plan was annoyed.
The black mage disappeared and the organisation of the black army collapsed. Nethertheless, deep in the Deadwood forests, undead are still alive and develop their own culture. It's not clear if ther're new leader.
Structure
The black army is organised in 3 subgroups:
The Undead
The summoned undead zombie and skeletton warriors come from all time periods. Only a core part were real warriors of the Dragon war, many others are former citizen of the Outlaw Hills or Deathfields who got killed by rogues and other things around the landscape. They use shields, morning stars, swords, lances, crossbows and dark armors, the emblem is a Skull. Smaller groups are controlled by undead generals, but they follow human sorcerors mostly.

The mages
A second leading group creates and commands the undead. Black mages who serve the same demon cults has settled near Deadwood and most of them joined the black army. It's unclear what's happened with them after the black mage disappeared. Most seem to died in the war.
Mercenaries
Mercenaries of Outlaw Hills, all kind of rogues, murderers and other heartless criminals work for the black army, too. Often they fight side by side with skelleton warriors for money, the black mages pay.
